meshmud

Catalogue

Everything you can carry in a pocket with holes. The hints say where to look, not how to get it. To compare with what you already have, type “collection” in the game.

Lying around

These are somewhere out there. You just have to find them, sometimes with a light.

sugar ration coupon

A ration coupon: 2 kg of sugar a month. Priceless. Literally, you cannot buy sugar without it.

Hint: In the kitchen. Sugar on coupons, a coupon for sugar.

cassette

A Stilon C-60 cassette. Biro on the label: “MESHMUD.P, side A, counter 042. DO NOT RECORD OVER THIS!”

Hint: Where you can't see a thing.

torch

A torch powered by a flat 4.5 V battery. Half full, or half empty. Works if you shake it.

Hint: Among the books and magazines.

carrot

A carrot from the allotment. A bit crooked, but organic before it was cool.

Hint: Where the water for tea gets boiled.

pencil

A hexagonal HB pencil. Fits a cassette spool perfectly. Every 1980s kid knows what it is really for.

Hint: Also near the books. Handy with a cassette.

bundle of waste paper

A bundle of old newspapers tied with string. On top, a 1984 party daily and a TV guide with the evening news circled.

Hint: Someone left old newspapers by the wall unit.

empty milk bottle

An empty glass milk bottle. Returnable. In this economy, almost a currency.

Hint: In the cellar, next to the preserves.

string bag

A nylon string shopping bag. Stretches forever, almost. With it you can carry three things instead of two.

Hint: Hangs on a door handle. No shopping without it.

Fiat 126p voucher

A voucher entitling the bearer to buy one Fiat 126p. Valid until 1989. Colour: whatever they have. Stamped and signed on the back: “Kazik”.

Hint: Lost where it is easy to get lost.

small vase

A crystal vase from Dewizex, the dollar shop. A sticker underneath says: “Do not touch. Grandma”.

Hint: Grandma would know where it stands.

Witaminex

A sachet of Witaminex. Orange vitamin powder kids ate dry, straight from the packet. Vitamins and joy.

Hint: At the pharmacy. For kids, but grown-ups snacked too.

Has to be wangled

You won't find these on the floor. You queue, trade, bribe, or have an auntie in America.

Dewizex voucher from the grower's son

A slightly crumpled Dewizex voucher with the grower's son's thumbprint. Worth two gum wrappers. At least.

Hint: The kids by the carpet beater know their chewing gum.

Dewizex voucher from Auntie

A one-dollar Dewizex voucher, straight from Chicago. Smells of Auntie's perfume and freedom.

Hint: Auntie in America wrote. Call her first, then square it with the caretaker.

bottle of milk

A full bottle of milk with a silver cap. Fresh from the milkman. Drink it or trade it.

Hint: From the milkman, for an empty bottle. The way it worked.

Kwaczek gum

Kwaczek gum with a tiny comic strip. The duck is in trouble again, and the punchline is in German, so nobody gets it.

Hint: At the kiosk, for goods in short supply.

Turbino gum

Turbino bubblegum. Tastes pink, but it's all about the wrapper picture: an Italian supercar with doors that open upwards. On the courtyard, harder currency than the złoty.

Hint: At the kiosk, for something to drink.

jerrycan of blue petrol

A jerrycan of blue petrol with two-stroke oil already mixed in. Smells like an entire Syrena.

Hint: Mr Zdzisio at the petrol station has a soft spot for certain goods.

toilet paper

A roll of grey toilet paper. In 1986, a harder currency than the złoty.

Hint: You have to queue for it. Or hand in waste paper.

orange

A Cuban orange. In 1986 seen once a year, at Christmas, after hours in a queue. Worth a fortune on the black market.

Hint: At the very front of the queue.

roll of two-złoty coins

A paper-wrapped roll of two-złoty coins. Barely enough for a call to America, or for nothing if the phone is hungry. Phone tokens won't exist until 1990.

Hint: At the kiosk, for a certain coupon. The kiosk lady always has change.
